WHAT IS ABVA?

The Alberta Buddhist (Vihara) Association (ABVA) (registered in Alberta) is based on the Theravada Tradition of Buddhism. The Association has existed for nearly 20 years, and is made up primarily of Buddhists of Sri Lankan Origin. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Buddhism. Membership dues and donations fund ABVA activities. Membership fee is $25 per year. The suggested tax-deductible donation is $240/year.

All persons, regardless of age, race, social, religious or educational background who are interested in studying and/or practicing stress management and meditation within the context of Theravada Buddhism, may be eligible for membership

The major aim of the ABVA is to provide services to both its members and the citizens of Edmonton through various programs including public presentations, lectures on Buddhism at the University of Alberta, Public workshops on Buddhism, meditation retreats, and volunteer activities. Regular events include: daily gatherings for worship; children's classes on Buddhism; new-year Chanting Ceremony for blessings; meditation retreats/lectures/informal discussions and workshops open to the public.

Although based on Theravada Buddhist principles, the ABVA has no interest in proselytising. Its programs and events are offered as a service to the public

The Association is recognized by Revenue Canada as a Registered Charitable Association (Reg. No: 89304 3646 RR 0001).
