You are kindly requested to read the following excerpts from the Satipattāna sutta prior to attending this retreat. We will be practicing most of the activities described in these excerpts during the retreat, besides sitting meditation.

The Four Postures

“Again, bhikkhus, when walking, a bhikkhu understands: ‘I am walking’; when standing, he understands: ‘I am standing’; when sitting, he understands: ‘I am sitting’; when lying down, he understands: ‘I am lying down’; or he understands accordingly however his body is disposed.”

“In this way he abides contemplating the “body as a body internally, externally, and both internally and externally… And he abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That too is how a bhikkhu abides contemplating the body as a body.”

Full Awareness

“Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is one who acts in full awareness when going forward and returning; who acts in full awareness when looking ahead and looking away; who acts in full awareness when flexing and extending his limbs; who acts in full awareness when wearing his robes and carrying his outer robe and bowl; who acts in full awareness when eating, drinking, consuming food, and tasting; who acts in full awareness when defecating and urinating; who acts in full awareness when walking, standing, sitting, falling asleep, waking up, talking, and keeping silent.”

“In this way he abides contemplating the body as a body internally, externally, and both internally and externally… And he abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That too is how a bhikkhu abides contemplating the body as a body.”

Oct 22: One-day Meditation Retreat

posted Oct 4, 2016, 9:28 PM by Kamal Ranaweera   [ updated Nov 2, 2016, 9:12 PM ]

One-day Silent Meditation Retreat

October 22, 2016 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm
The Four Foundations (Sathipatthäna) of mindfulness is the path for awakening and liberation. Liberating from all suffering is the Supreme Enlightenment. We practice based on this teaching which should be the way to emancipate from afflictions in human life.

’Even though enlightened, the Buddha and Arahants (enlightened monks) dwelled in a quiet places time to time. They stayed away from the busyness. Left behind all the associations. Those who are willing to gain imperturbableness should be able to spend adequate time with their practice’’.

Busyness is reasonable for a lay life. Though, as followers of the noble community,  regular meditators need to find a way to periodically avoid all distractions of daily life. At least, once a month they can dedicate  a day  with their fellow practitioners in order to fulfil the path. Respecting that,  Samatha Vipassana Meditation Centre is pleased to offer a one-day special meditation retreat for regular participants on Saturday October 22nd from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm at SVMC (3454 - 37 Street NW, Edmonton). If you would like to participate in this great meritorious deed, please sign up by submitting the form below. You are expected to bring your own lunch.

We kindly inform you that the sign-up for this retreat is now closed. Waiting list is also full. We regret that it is not possible to accommodate more participants due to space limitation of SVMC. Thank you for your understanding.

Vassäna Special Retreat Season - 2016

July 19 - October 15, 2016

What is Vassäna Retreat

Vassäna is the most fruitful season for both Monks and Lay practitioners. Having adequate  time, they dedicate the life for true practice. During this period they highly focus on meditation, dhamma discussions, sermons, chanting, offerings etc. Spending time together for numerous wholesome activities, they gain enormous merits and wholesomeness in order to reach the supermundane stages and final liberation of this samsaric journey.

Alberta Buddhist Vihara Association offers a series of special programs during 2016 Vassäna season at the Samatha Vipassana Meditation Centre. A summary of these programs and the program schedule is given in this page.

Sponsor, Vouchsafe and Patronize

Buddhism is not self-centred. The Buddha’s guidance is that always one should practice and realize the teachings and share and spread it among the society.

Sponsoring is not always about spending money. It is an honourable dedication on behalf of fellow followers. Therefore, we request and encourage you to take a part in this opportunity and help bring forward the other people and let us make a way them to accumulate this great occasion.

There are multiple programs that you can choose and organize with your fellows at SVMC.
