2600 Sambuddha Jayanthi Celebrations


A day long ceremony was held on May 21st at the Yellow Bird Community Centre to celebrate the 2600 Sambuddha Jayanthi (the 2600th anniversary of the enlightenment of the Gauthama Buddha).

WHAT IS ABVA?


The Alberta Buddhist (Vihara) Association (ABVA) (registered in Alberta) is based on the Theravada Tradition of Buddhism. The Association has existed for nearly 20 years, and is made up primarily of Buddhists of Sri Lankan Origin. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Buddhism. Membership dues and donations fund ABVA activities. Membership fee is $25 per year. The suggested tax-deductible donation is $240/year.

ALBERTA BUDDHIST VIHARA ASSOCIATION

The objectives of the Alberta Buddhist Vihara Association (ABVA) are to provide its membership and the greater Edmonton Community an understanding of Buddhism and its practice, particularly of the Theravada tradition. The activities of the ABVA are primarily through the Samatha-Vipassana Meditation Centre headed by Resident Monk, Venerable Galkulame Medhankara.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ABVA

Since its beginnings in May 1983, the Alberta Buddhist Vihara Association has grown to its present status as a community oriented religious organization serving its members and the public at large. Records on file show a group of founding members who felt the need for a Buddhist Association to serve the needs of Sri Lankan Buddhists living in Edmonton and surrounding communities.
