Samatha Vipassana Meditation Centre


The Samatha-Vipassana Meditation Centre (SVMC), Edmonton, Canada, was established as an affiliated institution of Alberta Buddhist Vihara Association (ABVA) with the intention of preserving the 'Original Teachings of the Buddha and Buddhist Meditation' within the context of Western culture. The primary purpose of the SVMC is to serve as the residence for the the Resident Monks and any visiting monks. 


1. To provide meditation and Dhamma instruction, also guidance in order to cultivate and develop Sila (morality), Samadhi (concentration), and Panna (wisdom).
2. To offer public talks and organized meditation retreats to both members of the ABVA and the general public of Canada, as well as the world at large.

The Meditation Centre was established on August 1, 2006 under the guidance of Venerable Bhikkhu Seelananda.

Though this Centre was opened in 2006, the Alberta Buddhist Vihara Association (ABVA) has now reached its 29th Anniversary. During this time, the ABVA and the Centre have supported many resident and visiting monks, as well as promoting and teaching Buddhist philosophies to its members and the general public.

As the Centre progresses and grows, we welcome all to participate in any manner capable.  There is much more to be done for the benefit of the many in this society.  We sincerely thank all those who have helped along the wayin  this worthwhile cause.

Programs and Events

The ABVA sponsors many programs and projects for all age groups ranging from introductory and educational programs for those with little knowledge of Buddhism to deeper and more involved discussions for those more knowledgeable. Most of the activities are conducted at the Samatha Vipassana Meditation Centre (SVMC).

Resident Monks

Arriving in Summer 2011 at the Samatha Vipassana Meditation Centre, a monk from Sri Lanka, Venerable Matthumangala Chandananda, is currently fulfilling an invitation from the Alberta Buddhist Vihara Association.

On invitation of Alberta Budhist Vihara Association, venerable Makola Nanda, also from Sri Lanka, arrived in Edmonton in July 2012.
