Regular Programs

The following programs are regularly conducted at the Samatha Vipassana Meditation Centre.
Guided Meditation (Sinhala)
7:30 AM - 10:30 AM on Saturdays
The Four Foundation (Sathipatthäna) of mindfulness is the path for awakening and liberation. Liberating from all the suffering is the Supreme Enlightenment. We practice based on this teaching and that should be the way to emancipate from afflictions in human life. This is a guided meditation session in Sinhala medium, following Samatha-Vipassana methods.
Guided Meditation (English)
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Tuesdays
We are an open tradition who share our great practices with the entire world. Let’s live freely in this short term of life. Right View leads us to Right Mindfulness. Right Mindfulness leads us to Purification. Pure mind is the way of Awakening. This is a guided meditation session conducted in English for those who want to awake.
Youth Meditation (English)
8:30 AM - 10:30 AM on 1st & 3rd Sundays
Youth is the strongest and most adventurous period of life. The Buddha awakened when he was a youth. This session focuses on developing wholesomeness and avoiding unwholesomeness by practicing meditation. All methods followed are from the original secrets of teaching (tipitaka). The program is conducted in English and is open to all youth.
Youth Meditation (Sinhala)
8:00 AM - 10:30 AM on 2nd & 4th Sundays
This is a chance for those who want to discover a unique path to overcome challenges of life. By practicing Buddhism, one can improve mindfulness and face the challenges in life more successfully. This program is focused towards the young generation migrated from Sri Lanka.
Full Moon Day Retreat
7:00 AM - 4:30 PM on 3rd Saturday
A full day retreat is an opportunity for you to get relieved from every-day busy schedule and experience the full awareness of your life. We facilitate this opportunity in every 3rd Sunday of the month. Observing 8 precepts, walking meditation and sitting meditation are the methods applied. This program is offered in both English and Sinhala mediums and is open to everyone. Time may change for the seasons.
Daily Chanting (Püjä)
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, everyday unless no other program held at this time
Confidence is the first step of our practice in 13 steps of awakening. Confidence can be gained through mindfulness and concentration by paying homage and reflecting on the qualities of the Awakened Great Teacher, The Lord Buddha. The Daily Chanting program is offered with this intention.
Sutta Discussion (English)
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM on Saturdays
Buddhism does not mean just sitting-meditation. Listening, reading and discussing are also main methods of practice. We are a discussion group that follows the original teachings (secret) of the Buddha. English speakers are welcome.
Dhamma Däna (Sinhala)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM on 2nd and 4th Sundays
There are 84,000 original teachings of the Buddha. Listening is the beginning of our practice and it is the best way to learn. We deliver sermons according to the original teachings. This is a Sinhala medium session with Q&A.

You can sponsor a sermon to transfer merits for departed relatives, bless your birthdays, commemorate anniversaries, etc.
Peaceful Spouses (Sinhala)
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM on 3rd Wednesday
Family is the core of the society. Happy parents make happiest life for the next generation. We provide guidance from the teachings of the Buddha to solve family situations and open ways to live happily. This program is offered in Sinhala medium. The spouses are required to participate.
Overcome Stress (English)
8:00 PM - 9:30 PM on 1st Monday
Stress is a well-known and common topic in our society. While popular approaches focus on managing stress, Buddhism can help overcoming it by seeing its cause. In this program, we help our community understand the principles and techniques in Buddhist way of overcoming stress.
